In 2001, Kevin Sullivan, a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, took a leap of faith and decided to change careers. He completed navigator flight school for the U.S. Air Force, just weeks prior to 9/11 and flew over 400 combat sorties in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Horn of Africa, earning several Medals. He says, “Iraq, in many ways became a pivotal event in my life. I experienced things that have changed [many of] my views…and the lessons I learned about my life were invaluable.”

Over the course of 3 tours in Iraq, Kevin became increasingly short tempered, jumpy, and began to lose sleep. In time, every Iraqi he met became an enemy in his eyes, in every parked truck was someone waiting to take a shot, nightmares were as frequent as sleep, and he began to have severe panic attacks at home and in the aircraft. “Although we are encouraged to seek help, mental health and the military do not mix well”; it is often seen as weakness and can be damaging to a flight career.

Finally, Kevin suffered a severe panic attack during a mission; his body shut down and he was rendered unconscious. Kevin was diagnosed with severe PTSD, and though he had a great military record and a line of high ranking officers that stood by him, he was medically released from service in 2007. He says, “My wife was my rock, through the whole process”. Inspired by the aeromedical evacuation flight doctors and nurses and a life-long love of learning, Kevin is now working to become a Physician Assistant. He is looking forward to the inherent challenge as well as the opportunity to serve his community.

An avid athlete, Kevin is a member of a rowing team, competes in Brazilian Jui Jitsui, and trains in boxing, kick boxing, and mixed martial arts. When he was asked to ride with World TEAM Sports, he felt that riding across the country was a challenge that he couldn’t pass up. Kevin is also an active member of the VFW and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) and wants to make a difference for wounded veterans.
