Sergeant Scott Bilyeu joined the U.S. Air Force in 1998 as a Pararescueman. He spent time in South America, Iceland, and Kuwait before he was sent to Afghanistan in September 2004. On a night mission, his helicopter crashed, tumbling several hundred feet down a canyon. The surviving crew found Scott a few yards from the helicopter, unconscious and not breathing. He was resuscitated but still unconscious. Due to the treacherous location of the accident it took almost nine hours for the crew to be rescued and for Scott to be taken to the first medical facility. It is truly a miracle Scott survived.
Scott spent two weeks in a coma, compounded by traumatic brain injury, broken arm, pelvis and ribs, collapsed lungs and a lacerated liver. It was apparent that Scott was going to need months, if not years, of rehabilitation to recover.. He was placed on a temporary medical retirement for five years, during which time he went through many therapies which included speech, cognitive, and physical.
Today, Scott is permanently retired from the Air Force and attending school. Scott is honored to be included in the World TEAM Sports Sea to Shining Sea event and hopes to inspire other injured service members to reach their full potential.
